I learned to drive in a Vega . . .

My Dad was frugal (certainly more so than myself) when I was younger and the two cars we owned when I turned 16 were a Chevy Nova and a Chevy Vega hatchback. These cars were so poorly built that radio nobs and window cranks would break the day you drove them off the lot. Now the Nova had some pick-up, but the Vega, well, there's just nothing good you can say about it.
Finally my Dad swore off GM products when he owned a Buick and not only did it cost more than the Chevys it was even less reliable. Traditionally my Mom would get the new car and Dad would get the shattered remains of the last new car that my Mom had trashed. Finally, upon retirement, he bought himself a brand new (first new car in his life) Ford Taurus - yep, livin' large - and drove it until there was no paint left on the hood.
