Its quite common for things to be jammed in nozzle handles to keep them pumping (though it should never be done). Properly working nozzles would shut off despite the handle being locked in the fully opened position. Folks should also not go back inside their car when pumping gas, as sliding in-and-out is a commons source of static electricity, which could spark a fire.
