2,139 9-3s and 1,849 Azteks were sold in February 2004. Although, in January 2004 only 1,220 9-3s were sold vs. 1,688 Azteks--which actually gives the Aztek slightly higher total sales for Jan. & Feb. 2004 combined. (source: see GM link below)
You raise some interesting points, although I have to disagree with your comment about how the competion always puts its hottest car forward first. Let's take Audi--the new S4 is just coming out 2 years after the release of the new A4...as was the case with the previous generation A4 and S4. The similar is also true for BMW and waiting to release M versions of their cars--there's no new M5 currently available with the release of the new 5 series. These are just 2 examples, and not the only ones. It's a fairly common practice to do this--there is the initial excitement (and sales) with the new models in general...and then when that begins to wane, then come the "sport" versions, convertibles, etc.
