Digital Signal Processor? Are you talking about a RISC style chip like an Alpha or something else? General theory of code optimization is to arrange the data so that it moves in and out of cache efficiently. Clock speed has nothing to do with it (ever notice that $5K SGI machines have clock speeds an order of magnitude slower than intel/AMD chips?)
The Compaq/HP/DEC alphas at the university used to be the fastest machines around for floating point work. In my experience (physics thesis research involving computational simulation) the compiler is much much more important than the chip architecture. Saw factor of 30% speedup in a C++ code on an SGI once when we started using SGI's CC rather than g++.
Unfortunately though AMD doesn't make a compiler. Havn't ever tried Intel's compiler but I assume its good (again assume it must be much better than MS Visual c++).
