I have owned an '87 900S, like you, and currently own an '88 9kt, '91 9kt, '95 9000CSE.
I liked my 900S, but it didn't handle as well as even our '88 9kt, and the '91 9kt is worlds better. The 900S was a cute car, but if I got another c900, it would definitely be an SPG or modified 900T.
The 9kt is a very modifiable car, and even with stage II it's super fast. I always find things like "wow" escaping my lips when I'm hitting 70 right after my 3rd gear shift. With some suspension mods, the 9kt is a tremendous car. Our '95 9kCSE is a bit soft, I think, but my wife prefers a smoother suspension.
If you want something special, then I would recommend a 9000 Aero, provided that rear seat folding is not that important to you. Those Aero seats don't fold well because of the side bolsters. You may find the styling a little bland, but this has quite a bit to do with color and wheels. The Aero in Imola red (see classifieds) is quite striking, and not to shabby in silver, either. Put on some 225 tires and you've got a beefy looking vehicle.
You might also look at the 9-3 Viggen. Although I've not driven a Viggen, from all I read, they certainly have something special about them. Get a Viggen rescue kit to improve control. That car looks incredible in yellow or the lightning blue, and silver isn't bad either. Happy hunting.
