A Mazda 6, while certainly a good car, is not in the same luxury car category of a BMW, Audi or SAAB among others. None of those make hatchbacks because they're seen as "down scale" or "down market." They've tried and failed. SAAB was failing with a hatchback and since introducing a sedan, sales have skyrocketed. It's a niche car.
Many have made your argument/question before, which goes something like this: "Why is SAAB abandoning hatchbacks just when Pontiac, Chevy, Toyota, etc. are all introducing them?"
The answer is simple: Those are cheapo cars that don't compete in the luxury segment/price point area as SAAB does. People don't want to buy expensive luxury hatchbacks. It's really that simple. Sure, a handful do, but a handful is not enough to sustain a car company.
