In the 90's SAAB offered both sedan and hatchback versions of the 9000, an even more expensive car than the 9-3. From my observations, I see 10 hatchbacks on the road for every 1 sedan from that production era. So I don't agree that it's market perception.
I think SAABs lack of sales was due to essentially zero TV advertising and product awareness to the buying public. I only remember seeing 1 TV ad for the NG900 (the one where those 4 men roll the car over, then get inside and drive away). And did SAAB ever run a TV ad showing the benefit of the hatchback over the sedan? I sure don't remember seeing one.
The way I see it, "tossing in the towel" and making the 9-3 a sedan is as bad as Apple Computer during the mid 90's when they were offering computers with built-in 486 cards! That sure as hell didn't revitalize their brand! Steve Jobs did when he introduced the iMac, which identified and embodied the essence of the Mac, and then advertised it aggressively. Someone at SAAB should do the same.
