I have had the luxury of testing side by side, PocketPC (iPaq 2215) based apps Destinator 2.0 & 3.0, Garmin StreetPilot III, and TomTom's offerings on a PocketPC. i am a Palm Vx user and have not yet had the pleasure of TomTom's Palm offering as of yet. You need to ask yourself how you are most going to use the device, do you need a handheld for portability between vehicles? Will you need or use Outlook for calandaring, Contacts, etc. A dash model is portable, but clunkier and won't slip into a pants pocket or suit coat pocket.
Garmin solved my biggest grip with the StreetPilot, (expensive proprietary memory) with the 2610 and 2620 due to arrive. I however needed access to calendar, contact info as well as the ability to be truly mobile and go between vehicles.
Consider as well that a handheld based device will allow for a software upgrade AND an antenna upgrade as technology improves, which is quite quickly these days in this segment. I have tested multiple antenna options as well, PCMCIA, CF, and Bluetooth in NMEA, SiRF & dual mode chipset form factors. You would be wise to go this route until the offerings level out, otherwise you will choose your path and have to live with it.
While Destinator 2.0 was good and Destinator 3.0 better, I recommend comparing against the offerings from TomTom. Service and support are much better in comparison and TomTom's visuals are better in my opinion. There are other factors as well, but I'll stop here...
If anyone is interested I will post some pics of the install in my 1997 900 SE of the iPaq.
