Leon's comments are pretty right on.
The unit pretty much stays put on the dash and the routing works really well. If I was doing it again, I'd upgrade to the 2620 for the higher level of routing options; but I am in the car for work in different areas, and have to change routes along the way. The 2620 has more flexibility for adding via points. I wouldn't pay the difference for the use you're talking about.
The touch screen works really well. I rarely use the speaker, although it is nice at times. I've yet to hard wire the unit, but did get the wire to do it. If you are in cities, you may have some loss w/o an external antenna if you're surrounded by tall buildings.
I just did a comparison of several OEM systems with a friend who ended up w/a TSX, and found the Garmin better on most points. He did too, after riding in my car with the garmin while shopping. Although I'm not crazy about the on dash look either, I especially find that the clarity and line of sight up on the dash is much better than the larger indash systems that require you to look away from the road to use them.
It's the same reason I mounted my mobile phone up high on the dash instead of using the saab mount. The only downside of the unit might be its requirement for powerhook up; some other competing units have the ability to put batteries in if you want to use away from the car. I've found that I don't need it (but I have a MAP76 for the hiking and boat backup system), and the 2610 has been excellent.
I've never valet'd the 9-5 for the other reasons (Reverse lockout and unknown/poor clutch skills of the pilots and Ferris Beuller flashbacks!), but if concerned about where I'm leaving the car, I'll drop the unit to the console (it fits in front of the shift) or out of sight in the trunk.
