Turn the A/C on switch to on but set your thermostat to the highest temp it goes to. This will put the system to to its "On" state but not turn the compressor or fans on. Leave it this way for 24 hours. Then reset the thermostat to the desired temperature.
There is a heating element in the compressor that will warm the system slightly so that any freon that changed from a gaseous to a liquid state during the winter shut down will change back to vapor. If you get a pocket on freon in this dense or liquid state hitting the compressor you can blow a seal. This usually happens in a townhouse setting where the blower unit is one floor above the compressor and the freon condenses down low in the compressor over winter. The heater returns the system to a lighter gaseous state so the compressor can pump as designed.
