from San Jose to Monterey Bay area instead.
If time and your 2-year old permits, I would suggest spending the night at Monterey/Carmel or a bread and breakfast place there. Take a leisurely tour of downtown Carmel and the various shops and resturants there. You may want to go to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, I think your 2-year old would like that.
If you like, do the tourist thing with 17-Mile Drive and Pebble Beach (to me the drive really isn't that great, you get more by driving on Highway One) or just go directly to Pacific Grove and drive around there. Look at some open house if you are in there during the weekend 8-). Then drive along the coast, up or down. Again, if time permits, drive up from Highway One to San Francisco, or down to San Simeon and loop back to San Jose.
If you go to San Francisco and if sunny go to the San Francisco Marina, then take the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito. You can stop by various look out places along the way. There is a great place for children and adults alike, it's the Exploratorium (http://www.exploratorium.edu/). It is close to various scenic places as well.
I am sure others will give you their favorite spots. Have fun, it's a great area to visit.
