Does your son want to be a registered patent attorney (you can litigate IP cases without being a registered patent attorney but you cannot prosecute patent and trademark applications with the USPatent and Trademark Offic)? If so, he needs to look into the requirements to take the patent bar now. To sit for the patent bar, which is separate from the state bars, he must meet certain criteria, for example, a BS in EE or other hard science. Without a BS in EE, don't assume that he has met the requirements. This is the primary reason there are so few registered patent attorneys. Go to http://www.uspto.gov/web/offices/dcom/gcounsel/oed.htm to research the requirements.
If he is interested in being a registered patent attorney then his undergraduate degree has now become as important, if not more so, than his law school degree. As a rule, EE's are one of the most sought after degrees among patent attorneys. However, you say he has a minor; he may want to think about getting the BS.
