Hi Jason,
Virginia is a bit of a scam regarding tickets. That reckless law is ludicrous, IMHO. And how they get away with that radar detector law...
Is your court appearance mandatory? I would strongly recommend hiring a local attorney. Check the online yellow pages. When I got a speeding ticket in NC, the bar association was happy to refer me to a local lawyer specializing in traffic cases. I did not have to attend my mandatory appearance and he did a great job of drastically reducing my ticket.
Pleading not guilty isn't wise, but if you show up in person and speak with the DA you will likely get some reduction. Not showing to a mandatory appearance results in a warrant, which couldn't be a good thing.
Good luck!
Craig
