A friend of mine has a Prius, just a few months old. He was travelling on the highway today under gas engine power when the engine quit without warning. He was not too perturbed initially becasue the electic motor kicked in and he moved along fine for about 3 minutes until the battery ran down. This raises the question of what the range of the Prius is at highway speeds on battery alone. The battery in the hybrids is not huge (approx 50 kg) The stored energy in the battery pack is about 6 MJ, and peak power is 25 kW giving less than 4 minutes of useful life at speed. This came as a surprise to us, but we have experimental verification
