I've always been able to get better than the EPA ratings, it's just my driving profile. That's been true for a couple VWs, a couple Saabs, & a couple HondAcuras. I've got a nice drive into work with little reason to stop & start. My '95 Integra GSR gets 30, which is better than it's EPA rating.
My wife drives her '01 9³ a really short distance to work, she gets about 22 which is less. But if we trade cars, I still get 30 in the Saab & she gets 22 in the Integra. For another example I got around 34 driving to SOC03 & back (36 displayed on the SID).
So terrain, driving profile, & your own right foot have a much stronger influence than anyone gives them credit for.
