My wife's Saab was rear ended some years ago and we hired a lawyer to resolve it. Best advice we got was don't deal with anyone, that he would. My insurance company was pissed. Cost them $90,000 for underinsured motorist (medical bills and car totalled). His company paid 10,000. Not sure that you should have accepted a check from them. Could be considered "settled".
