gas prices are even higher in big sur than most of california, make sure you fill up before you into the area, as you will be paying well over $3.00/gallon at the couple of stations within big sur proper.
it's a very quiet area with great scenery, and nice hiking trails. if you are travelling with kids be aware that within big sur itself there isn't a lot of things for them to do in relation to big city activities they might be used to. mark :-)
