My Dad. Pretty bad accident, though everyone is in decent health, just bumps and bruises. It was on the highway at 70+ mph a 6 car pile-up and my dad was 3rd in the line and the only one to manage not to hit the car in that was in front of him. He was at a dead stop when the guy behind him, hit his rear bumper on an angle while trying to change lanes, and spun him around 180 degrees. The Insurance co for the guy that hit my dad (Safety) said the best they could do is sell the damaged car at auction with a starting bid of $500. My dad howled in laughter. The car is a 1984 Mercedes Benz 300D with 78k original miles on it. He is original owner and it is in mint condition. He routinely gets offered $7500 by his mechanic to sell him the car, but the book on it is only $2500, so it looks like thats all he will get for it after a few shouting matches with the adjuster. The repair bill came out to $10,500 even though there is no frame damage and the car would be drivable if it had working taillights. He can never replace the car for $2500 or even at $7500 it would be a long time before he found something even close. It does not seem fair that he is out 1 fine car and very little money to do anything with.

The Accident was in Mass.
Any suggestions on how he can do better than a book value settlement? He seems intent on taking this to court, but I don't think he can win.
