Hey, sorry to hear about the accident. And I'll reiterate whats been said...that car is a car, and it's a good thing your Dad's okay.
This has happened to me once, and my dad once, both recently. Here's what we did. Compile a list of the things on that car that have been recently replaced/repaired and the general condition of the thing (it sounds like ut was truly a gem...low miles, orig owner!)
Find advertisements for similar cars and compile a list...to help show that blue book is not accurate. Furthermore...and this is my favorite part, tell the insurance company (when they offer you a very low amount) that maybe THEY should try to find a replacemnt car of like kind and quality with the amount that they offer.
My dad had his Saab hit in a parking lot recenlty. Our insurance company called to report that the car was "totaled" after my dad submitted his first body shop estimate (bumper, head/foglights, grille, indicators, and a little straightening of the cross member that the hood latches to) The insurance company hadn't even seen the car...but offered my dad $1300 for it (92 9000S). He asked them how they came to that number...well, the insurance company has a consultant (or they do it themselves) do a market search of similar cars in the area...the consultant didn't find ANY '92 Saab 9000's in Northern California...and well, they just found a book value for the car.
Remind the insurance company that THERE ARE NO 1984 300D MBZ's with only 78K miles!!!!! Their job is to provide your dad with enough money to replace his car.... if $2500 won't cover it, then they aren't doing there job.
I got $4997.82 or something for my '85 BMW 325e w/120K a while back. The insurance company's first offer was something like $3000. It can be done. Dig those heels in and get ready for a battle. And be glad that your dad's okay. Be ready to prove the exceptional nature of your dad's car.
Good luck.
~Peter
