Tell your dad to remember the important things in life and be happy he is not injured and is well enough to still talk to his son. Then use the $2500 as a down payment on a used E300 he can get on eBay or Autotrader.
Cars always have different values in the eyes of the owner. A mint condition '84 Benz might be worth a lot to a select few people, but it is worth nothing to the general public. And the general public includes the insurance companies. My excellent condition '99 9-5 with 102K miles is probably worth only $2500 to an insurance company as well, although it is worth 5 times that to me.
