I agree, DO NOT underestimate the power and importance of diet and exercise.
Avoid excess sugar, white bread, pasta, white rice, french fries, ice cream, and other junk food!
Eat mostly fish, lean meat, fresh fruit, and vegetables, and you'll be a lot healthier, with optimal cholesterol and LDL/HDL levels.
The proper way to lower cholesterol is to try diet and exercise first, but this often fails, mostly because people are not instructed properly, or lack the willpower to eat properly and exercise over the long haul.
Statins are overprescribed, often in lieu of diet and exercise.
