It is true that if you do not receive a service or item you purchased using a credit card, by law, as long as you initiate the dispute, they must refund your money and extract it themselves from the merchant. I know, I have a merchant account myself. However, if the merchant can prove that they did give you service or did deliver your item, then they'll put it right back on your statement. I'm willing to bet that if you read the AAAdvantage (not to be confused with my own credit card service provider, Citibank AAdvantage) agreement, there is probably no stipulation that they have to come up with the exact car you want, but you still might see how far you get. Dispute it - perhaps AAAdvantage realizes that some people will dispute it and are simply counting on the folks who are either too busy to do that or too intimidated. I've gone through this from both sides. I've disputed a number of items that I never received but paid by credit card, mostly from overseas. At most, the credit card company has asked me five questions and sent a form to be filled out and notarized, but none of my own disputes have ever been contested by a merchant and you are credited the amount at the time of the beginning of the dispute. You do not have to wait until the end of it...
Sorry, didn't fully read the original thread and Bill's other reply before my first reponse.
Good luck,
