because mine went out as well, in October 2003, five years and two months after I had purchased a Neptune washer and a matching dryer. The problem was diagnosed as the motor control board and when it was replaced, I made it a point to carefully examine the board. I found there is the potential for a ton of things to go wrong on that board. Worse yet, I couldn't miss the sticker proclaiming "made in China." A $1,000 washer with several key parts made in China. Supposedly the final assembly is done at Maytag's Indiana plant, thus the "Made in America" claim.

I had a Kenmore top-loader for 19 years prior to this one, with no problems. I will stay with a front-loading machine. I believe it does a better job in cleaning and with water useage. Maytag for future purchases is out, however. Strangely enough, I read that Maytag is owned by the same company that owns Hoover, as in vacuum cleaners. Hoover is all I've ever owned and have never had any trouble with them.

The woman at Maytag whom I called for service chided me about not having purchased the five-year service agreement when I bought the washer. I pointed out that it was five years, two months since my purchase and asked if I would be covered had I purchased that agreement. Her reply? "No, but you should have purchased it anyway!"

Actually, after reading the same link about the Neptunes last October, I fell for the repairman's pitch. I bought a three year service agreement for all parts and labor on the washer, plus he replaced the control board, all for $424. It's rare that I purchase an extended warranty on anything, but I figured this might be the one time it would pay for itself.

A recent edition of Consumer's Report has ratings on numerous washers and dryers, including top and front-loading. Fortunately, there are more choices in quality front-loaders than we had in 1997 or '98.
