Health care is a problem for all US companies because we insist on a
massively wasteful and inefficient market-based system for delivering
health care. The result is we spend way more money and deliver much
less quality health care on virtually every measure you care to look
at.
This is not a union problem - it's a US problem. There is, of course,
a solution: universal single-payer health care, like every other
industrialized country provides. Heck, CUBA manages full universal
free care.
I can't comment on your ability to fire employees, but in general
unions were historically one of the biggest creators of the middle
class, and all of us have benefited from past union struggles (ex.
the 40-hour work week).
How much of that $700 per car could be made up for with more streamlined
management and bureaucracy and less outrageous executive salaries? I
don't know, but I bet it's a fair amount.
