Compare union shops in the rust belt with the newest non-union, shops in the South and you'll see how your argument doesn't hold up. Same health care system--less waste, wider profit margins, higher quality cars, happy workers. Markets create efficiency; monopolies are inefficient, whether it be private, government or union. Check out editorial in last Friday's Wall Street Journal--standard of living, including our poorest, soars above virtually all other industrialized countries, contrary to popular belief. It boils down to this: where does the world come for health care when all their options are up--your state (e.g. Massachusetts General) or Havana General?
I also disagree with your statement that other health care systems out perform ours. Have you seen how they treat old people in industrialized Europe? Where do Canadians come for their bypasses and joint replacement (even though we take advantage of their lower prescription drug costs)? The common mistake is to say we have millions of people without health care. We have millions of people without health care INSURANCE. They ALL get health care when they need it. And untold millions of these chose NOT to buy insurance and then rely on people that are covered to pay up. The latest class action suit against non-profit hospitals distorts that reality.
I concede capitalism is a cruel system. Just less cruel than all the rest.
