Questions to ask when buying a used car (long)

I have been looking for a 9k Aero for almost a year now and think I may have found something, but I just don't get a good feeling when I talk to the seller. I've owned Saabs for long enough that if I could take a good look at the car I could satisfy myself as to whether it's a good vehicle or not, but since this one's about 250 miles away, just to look at it is a major commitment, so...
Seller says she has owned it for only 8 months but is selling it because she is pregnant and doesn't want a stick any more. Does this wound reasonable (never having been pregnant myself!)?
I asked if there is anything wrong with the car - only that the sunroof doesn't work, she said. I also asked if it had ever been in a wreck - not as far as she knows. Any work done on it? - alternator and front brake pads replaced.
Usually when I call about cars the seller is enthusuastic about the car and is happy to talk about everything related to the car and their ownership experience - but this was like pulling teeth. So does anybody have any good techniques for getting more information i.e. some "High gain" questions to ask?
Alternatively - is there anybody on the west side of Chicago that would like to take a look at it for me?!
I will run a carfax before I go see it also, but I want to wait before I'm fairly sure about it before putting down my $20.
Thanks
Rod
