If your gut is leaving you even a teeney bit twitchy, run. That said, I bought our Aero under less than perfect conditions. I was able to run the maint history on the car from the dealer and indy that took care of it. It was clear that oil, fluids, etc were taken care of. It was also clear that the car had had some hard living, and would likely need some fixing.
Fortunately I was buying through a Ford dealer, and was able to purchace a 2yr warranty for $1800. I got about 2500 back out of it despite the $100 deductable. Now, after 3 yrs I'm comfortable with the car, and feel it was a good buy in the long run.
So, like Ari said, walk away from the car if you don't feel absolutely good about it. I lived in Chicago, and got the impression that folks don't care for their cars the way you would want your car to be cared for early in life. Also they don't hesitate to lie for money, so have an assumption that you are not getting the whole picture.
Do get the car checked out by an indy. And drive on over! There is no good time to go to Chi town traffic wise, though I had good luck hitting the skyway at about 9:30am. Shot right through town. I lived in Northfield. It could take me 1/2hr or 2-3hrs to get downtown. Pick your times.
What happened to your job change?
