I assisted college roommates with this process in our offcampus apartment.
The most memorable part of the job was the cleaning. You spend more time getting bottles and cookware clean than you do actually preparing the brew. It requires much more cleaning than home-made soda does.
That aside, we had great results, even on the first attempt. Second attempt was fabulous. I'm not a beer conosuer, but everyone who tried it really liked it.
Just like any cooking excercise, it's not difficult to exceed the quality of anything premade you can buy at the grocery store, beer included.
A local homebrewing business also organized parties where people could get together and learn how to homebrew. The host of the party kept the brew in exchange for their hospitality, and the homebrewing business created relationships with lots of new customers.
