Have an "out" plan Posted by Saabpilot [Email] (#134) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Saabpilot) on Fri, 25 Jun 2004 07:34:43 In Reply to: long distance car purchasing, TML [Profile/Gallery] , Thu, 24 Jun 2004 19:45:40 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I agree the ability to walk away is key. If you're buying from a private seller make sure you agree whether or not any deposit you send them is refundable should you get there and the car is not to your liking. Same with a dealership, although I'd be even more cautious and make sure you get it in writing.
I bought my '87 900 turbo convertible through Ebay and it was 2 states away. I used frequent flyer miles (a nice luxury to have) and had a round trip ticket. Had I gotten there and the car wasn't as represented I would have gone back to the airport and flown home.
Get a local person on this bulletin board to check the car out if you can. Better yet see if the seller will take the car to a *qualified* mechanic for a pre-purchase inspection. But you should pay for this service. Get as many detailed photos emailed to you as possible.
And remember if it's a used car it is a used car. There will be things needing attention, especially if it is an older car. I was surprised by dry rotted tires and a noise in the left front brake but I still bought the car. I drove it home nearly 600 miles and when night fell discovered the instrument lights didn't work. That was fun. I still feel I got a good deal for what I paid. I spent a couple of thousand in the next 6 months fixing other things that came up.
So I guess the moral of the story is to be prepared and always have an "out." Best of luck.
