That's all I've ever done... I'm on my 3rd Saab right now. All of Saabs have been purchased long-distance from individuals. I'll give a brief run-down of my experience(s).
1987 Saab 900S - This was my first Saab, so I really didn't have a clue what questions to ask. I saw one picture of the car and then drove over 400 miles to pick it up and drove it home. I was fairly satisfied, but if I had known then what I know now, I would have asked a lot more questions.
1990 Saab 900 Turbo - I found this car on TSN and asked as many questions as I could. I felt really comfortable with the transaction and couldn't resist since the price was so low. I only saw one picture of the car, but I still felt good about everything. I mailed a check and he sent me all of the documentation (title) in return. I then had the car shipped over 2,000 miles to my location. I was extremely satisfied with this transaction.
1996 Saab 900 SE Turbo - I also found this car on TSN. I probably asked too many questions with this one, but better safe than sorry. I saw lots of pictures of this beauty prior to purchase and I was more than comfortable in pursuing it. I flew about 450 miles to pick the car up and drove it home. I would definitely do it again in a heartbeat.
As you can see, it all depends on what questions you ask and how each party handles the entire transaction. If you're going with a dealer, that's a completely different ballgame. Just keep communication open, but ideally, try to find something in your area first. If I lived in an area where Saabs were actually for sale, I would have seriously considered something local. I certainly don't have any regrets in regard to my long-distance purchases, though. Good luck with whatever you decide. Drive safely, and KEEP ON SAABING!!!
