Not crazy. A suggestion, check out a post and beam house. Years ago there was an episode on This Old House about a firm that helps you design your house. You do the site work and foundation. They make the post and beams, deliver to the site and then raise the beams. Their panelized roof sections and walls are brought in and attached, windows go into precut holes. The close in is pretty quick so you can build late in the season and fit out your interior conditions in cold weather. Panels are gypsum board interior and an exterior product (CDX?) bonded together by an eight inch layer of isocyanurate foam. Very dense, rigid and a high R value. I think it was call Ben Benson's Post and Beam homes. Custom work, but modular in nature. Can have very dranatic interiors with high ceilings.
