Do some web searches for different style homes.
Post and beam is one. My wife's cousin did this in VT, another friend did this in MA. Both basically built the places themselves. Both went to a post and beam school (1 week).
There are a variety of house kits out there as well (am looking into these to put one on some land we have in Maine.) They range from very basic to lavish.
Take your time to figure out what you need, what will work in the area where you plan to build. If you find some land you like grab it while you can. You don't have to have the house part finalized to buy the land. It probably makes sense to build something at least somewhat similar to nearby houses. It makes it an easier sell down the road.
There are a lot of books on this stuff, including being your own subcontractor. head to your library or bookstore and start educating yourself.
