In the early 1990's, my dad built the house he and my mom are currently living in. He did all of the work himself, with the exception of heating, A/C, carpet, and custom-built cabinets. My mother kept a total of every single item bought, down to the very last nail. Granted, this project took a little over 4 years, but the end result was more than worth it.
Will you save money? Most definitely.
Would my dad recommend it? Maybe once, but not more than that.
Is it really worth the effort? Absolutely.
Building your home is probably one of the most rewarding projects you could ever undertake. It does require profound amounts of time and patience, but the ends will justify the means (for most people, anyway). Look at it this way - it's no different than your car. When you have a problem, you have 3 choices: 1)Do all of the work yourself and save tons of money, 2)Get someone to help you out (indy), pay them in some form for their services, and save some money, or 3)Take your car in to the dealer, dish out all of your spare change, and forget having to mess with any potential headaches.
The choice is ultimately up to you. If it were me and I had the opportunity and time to do so, I would definitely look in to building my own home. It's awfully convenient to go out and buy a suitable home, however. Just be sure to consider your time, budget, and motivation. Also, keep in mind that the more you save now, the more you can make later (if you plan on selling the home later on down the road). Having all of this said, I think the happy-medium you originally proposed by using contractors and doing some work yourself may prove to be ideal.
Whatever you decide, good luck. Drive safely, and KEEP ON SAABING!!!
