you will stay there for a long time, then yes, by all means build something that you always wanted.

If you are not really sure how long you will stay in the area, then building a house from scratch and spending a lot of effort in it may not be the best way to spend your family time. The last thing you want is finding out you need to relocate with a partially built house.

Not sure where in NJ you are looking at, there is no lack of houses, new or old in the area. Yes, prices are out of this world lately, and some prices are just down right ridiculous and borderline on the comical. I keep seeing asking price starting at $500+K for a small three bedroom 1.5 bath house with a one car garage on a tiny lot. Sometimes I wonder who are buying these as they aren't ocean front properties in Malibu.

You mostly will save money as well as you get exactly what you want but you need to figure in the value of your time as well as your family time in the process. A house is worth it only if you can use it fully. Contrary to some, I don't believe getting a big house is a good investment. Yes, it is a form of forced investment, probably good for some people but a house is not a liquid asset, you can't sell it in a hurry and at a good price especially if the economy goes south or with rising interest rate.

Have you looked at Warren, Bernardsville, Liberty Corner, Basking Ridge areas ? There are many nice houses or lots out there if you don't mind driving. Have you looked into various neighborhood yet ?
