VW can do this as they've sold diesels for many, many years in the US. So they have:
- trained service techs
- parts availability
and high volume to justify the cost.
Saab would probably sell a few thousand diesels in the US. Does that volume justify all the training and parts support required? I doubt it.
VW has created a niche market since it started with the high volume Rabbit diesel marketed back in the early 70s gas crunch. An 'upscale', low volume brand like Saab would need a lot of investment to play in that niche, but with little return hitting the bottom line.
