I believe that to learn to drive well and safely one first needs to understand the basics of how brakes, clutch, trans, etc work. And then the basics of tire adhesion, oversteer, understeer, spin correction, etc.
Then what you do with hands and feet to control the car can make sense. Have him start with getting the car underway without touching the gas, emphasize light touch and smooth application of all controls. Location of the car relative to other objects, drive down the center of the lane, not relative to the right or left lines. Then how to look at how others drive to predict/ expect what they are going to do. Maybe look for the local SCCA autocross, go and watch, ask for a ride with an experienced driver.
