I started with my daughter in an auto trans car (wife's Exploder) about 6 months ago. Then moved to my 9K. She has taken some miles off the clutch and on one occasion really lit up the tires, but that's part of the learning.
Do a lot of parking lot time.
If you can, drive on rural roads...less to worry about.
Don't get into traffic for several outings
Make him keep a log of day, distance, time behind the wheel, what he learned, what he has to work on. And yeah, what he sucks at.
I have also bought a bunch of flexible plastic cones and set up a little course for her to drive through in the high school parking lot--a little like an autocross, but at low speed. It does wonders for steering technique and timing, which can be pretty loose when kids are learning.
Email me for other thoughts if you like.
Be patient. Which is hard when you can smell the clutch.
Good luck
Noel
