I hate to admit it, but eveything in our place is IKEA. Won't be for very long, though. There's been wild 'decontenting'. On the whole, the older stuff holds up better. Their modular business stuff is also quite solid. Our bedroom set and first office set fell apart, tho.
I'm tempted to say it's still better than what you find in most discount places, but the stuff coming out of China in those places has gotten better.
We recently bought a few more bookcases to go with our 10-year old set, and they were cost-engineered, to say the least. Not a single extra square centimeter of laminate, crappier hardware, etc.
Goes to prove (agagin) you don't get to be the richest man alive by selling the best product in the market!
On the original point, though, I don't think the make of the car in the lobby display will suffer the slings and arrows of the furniture's longevity any more than the quality of the meatballs in the cafeteria. You go to IKEA to spend less money, lug it home, and assemble it yourself...that's the deal and you know it when you walk in the door. But doesn't Volvo have that spot now?
