Why Rolex? Have you looked at other brands like Omega, Breitling, Oris, Minerva, Zenith, Patek, etc?
Do you want sporty? Dressy? Diver? Pilot? What features do you need?
My personal opinion is that most Tag's and Rolex's are to show status and wealth. Rolex, however, puts a darn good movement inside. Look for a Chronometer (not a Chronograph, unless that's a feature you need). A chronometer is a certified automatic winding movement. Most Tag's use quartz movments. I would not pay hundreds or thousands of dollars for a watch with a quartz movement. I have a $5 Wal-Mart special for that. It's my beach/workout/whitewater rafting watch.
At a minimum, look for automatic movement. Chronometer preferred. They'll last for your lifetime, and hopefully your great-grandkids, too.
Here's what I'm about to get. It'll be or my 5th anniv... Oris Miles Davis Worldtimer. I've wanted a 2 time zone automatic for years, actually ever since I got my first Oris.
