I looked at them earlier this year with the intent to buy a new submariner. You can find a lot of information on spotting a fake Rolex on the internet. Also, apparently some unscrupulous dealers change the faces of cheeper models with those of more expensive models and sell the watch as the more expensive watch, so you will probably want to stick to official sellers.
I was turned off by a used submariner that I saw. It had chipped paint on the bexel and a scratched crystal. This begged the question, should a watch in that price range really have numbers painted on?
I needed something that could standup to everyday wear and tear and that would be good for diving and dining. I ended up buying a Breitling. I made my choice because of superior materials (titanium over stainless steel) and workmanship that included the lack of paint anywhere on the exterior (all numbers and tics are milled into the bezel) and because the crystal is set lower than the bezel, unlike the Rolex, which has a crystal that sticks out about 1/8 inch.
