Yeah, I'm still going through some of those "lost a limb" sensations where when I get ready to go to the store or to work for a split-second I find myself thinking "did I do all the stuff I need to for the dog before I leave?"
There's no doubt that caring for an aging dog is a burden to the dog and the owners but Delia never lost her personality until perhaps the very end. I don't miss the continuous worry and stress of knowing the awful day was coming, just when would it arrive or would her condition worsen to a point that the decision was easy. Fortunately it did, and while I do miss her it has alleviated a constant worry from my life. I wasn't willing to euthanize her until I knew the time was right and I and the vets knew it was right when I did it.
Yes, it will be a while before I take on another dog. I've heard from both camps that I should immediately and others to wait at least a year. I'm moving soon so will see how the new loft situation is and how large a dog I think I can handle. I do love labs or lab-mixes though.
