IMHO, NASCAR is a perfect sport for the typical American couch potato sports fan. You can go to a race, sit in one place, drink tasteless beer, eat junk food, and see everything. And it's totally mindless, from a spectator perspective. Plus it is made for TV as well, so those not at the race can have the same mindless experience.
I've always preferred road racing and followed F1 avidly for years, but I doubt it will gain much traction in the US, no matter how many races take place here. You can't see a road race from one spot, it's harder to understand what is going on at different points on the course, and in the US few care about the brands or companies that support the sport. Plus, I don't think American racing fans relate to the cars at all--even less than they do to CART or IRL cars. US F1 drivers may be a small draw, but unless they are "brands" in themselves like the top NASCAR drivers they won't draw a crowd.
