Well...my two cents...first of all, working for a boss you don't like is manageable but if you don't respect him it's the worst situation I can think of (I've been there)...and since you said yourself that you've got a lot to learn and that your new boss is clueless, who will you learn from? But to be fair to the guy, maybe he just isn't well known or understood, so maybe the grapevine has it wrong...but something very disturbing is the fact that this position is open because of layoffs...so I would dig into that and find out what was wrong with the old guys...was the business just not there to get, do you really have the right products the market needs, was it poor management or "my way or the highway" management...could be any number of these or other things....my point is that you need to somehow figure out what went wrong so yo can decide if you have any hope to control the situation or it controls you....
