For women that have a career where they have build up 'name recognition', dropping their old name completely is not an option. So there are practical reasons for a women to hyphenate or not change ones name at all.
Personally, I feel that it is tedious.
And when women change their names, there are legal things that are a PIA. Sell that car that was registered in her maiden name. Need proof that you are the same person! The title is in the maiden name. So drag around that marriage licence and birth certificates so you can impersonate your maiden name. Then you get a check payable to, you guessed it, your maiden name. Then register the new vehicle and you get a check for the balance of tags fees and taxes on the old vehicle, payable to the name on the old title. Get a passport, birth certificate says you are someone else. Drag out the birth certificate, marrage licences etc. And if a gal has been married once before that, many things turn into too much assembly of chains of documents. So you get a passport and your wife takes her kids from a previous marrage across the border. Come on back. So, have passport, have kids birth certificates. Nothing matches, still have to drag around the marriage licence. Makes the convenience of a passport hardly worth the expense to get it. So the system does not work very well for some women. But thats an old story!
But sometimes I need to know my wife's mother's maiden name, oh death... where is thy sting?
