We went for two weeks last December. Stayed one week at the Kaanapali Beach Hotel and one week in a condo in Kihei.
I would definately recommend the the KBH, very friendly and very good and reasonable priced restaurants on the premise. All you can eat good breakfast for free. Nice beach, but shorebreak can be big.
Kihei is OK, traffic and strip malls. Beaches are good at Kamaole and east towards Wailea. NOT the western part, algae and brown water due to runoff.
Lahaina is one of my favorite hangouts, good walking town.
Hope you like seafood , the supermarkets have great fish selection and sushi.
Also, we found the pools too cold to use much since the ones we had were unheated.
We took a snorkeling / whalewatching trip to Lanai, awesome snorkeling -best I've ever done (better than Cozumel, I think). Almost everyone was seasick on the way back, very rough, but was still worth it (to me since I wasnt sick)
