The SPG got rear ended. My brother was simply sitting at a red light, late at night. Some fool slammed into him, at 30-40 mph! He said he was timing the light, he saw the other light turn yellow, so he kept going, expecting a green. Apparently he disregarded the fact that my brother was sitting at the red light. The light was still red at the time of the impact too. Just got word SPG is totalled. They say $2800. We are going to hold out for more. The NADA book actually rates the SPG at $8100....it has it in the collectible car category.
My brother test drove the 9-2X (linear though, dealer didn't have an Aero on hand) and my brother really disliked it. He didn't care for the handling, and it felt weak. He also didn't like the interior, as he felt that it felt really Japanese. I'm sure the Aero is nicer, but 30K+ was a bit excessive for a college student's car.
The Jetta GLI 1.8T is pretty badass....18" BBS wheels, sport suspension, body kit, 6 speed, recaro seats. There was no other new car on the market that excited my brother. We had found a used 01 Viggen at Garden City SAAB, but it was sold by the time we went to look at it!
I've just read things about VW's reliability...but my bro wants the car. I suppose that is what warranties are for. I heard that the 2 largest issues, the coilpacks, and the window regulators, have been addressed for 2004. We'll see how it goes.
Now that the SPG is likely gone though, I'm having withdrawal. I may pick one up if it comes along, as a 2nd car to use for fun on weekends, and keep my '99 9-3 as a daily driver.
