I have a 2001 9-3 with 56,000 miles. - Comparable mileage to your Jetta.
So far I have had the following issues:
1) Peeling undercoat in wheel wells - Fixed under warranty at 1000 mile check
2) Slight coolant leak at turbo - it left a stain on the oil filter but no measureable coolant loss or drip under car. - reported to dealer at 1000 mile check but I had to bring it back a month or so later and they fixed it properly the second time. Dealer provided free loaner for the 1000 mile check and follow up visit.
3)occaisional balky shifting- I did the transmission oil upgrade myself because it was easier on my schedule than bringing it to the dealer - problem solved.
4) applied silicone lube to squeaky fold down rear seat.- Problem solved.
5)shift lever action "sticky" on hot days. - I applied oil to the linkage myself since it was off warranty-a 2 minute job. - Problem solved
Other than the routine maintenance required by the owners manual that has been it for a car approaching 60,000 miles. I'm not trying to find fault with your message since it was in response to someones request for opinions, but from my experience I would challenge your statement that the Jetta would be expected to be more reliable. Both of our experiences are single data points, but I think the DI cassette and turbo issues etc get blown out of proportion when they are discuseed here, and then the same incidents are rediscussed on this board.
