So far so good... Posted by Misplacedyankee [Email] (#1756) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Misplacedyankee) on Sun, 5 Sep 2004 18:37:07 In Reply to: VW reliability vs SAAB? Sorry to hear about the SPG. I had to sell my Viggen and got a loaded 2004 Passat 1.8T 5spd to replace it as my long distance commuter car. 12K miles in 3 months and not one single issue. My parents own a 2000 Passat 1.8T auto with 65K miles and no problems.
Now (knock on wood) I have owned more VWs than Saabs and I have never had a reliability issue with any of the VWs I (or my family) have owned from 1985 to 2004. That includes 1 Quantum, 6 Jettas and 2 Passats. Every car maker has a few less than perfect ones roll off the line...VW makes a lot of cars so more stories to hear about.
While I am just sitting back waiting to get another 9-5 aero once my commute dies down, I am very impressed with the Passat at this point. Its top notch quality for the price. The interior is excellent, it shifts like a champ and looks pretty decent (especially when well waxed). the 1.8T is no Saab turbo, but it gets the job done.
The Jetta GLI is a nice car. I would have gotten one, but for a few thousand more the Passat was a better fit if I ever need to put the whole family in the car. I was also surprised the GLI didn't have a leather seat option. Hope he has the same luck I have had so far!
