Several people that I've known who have relocated to the Boston area all tell the same story: "The job offers we got were amazing. Then we moved here and realized that everything costs three times as much as everyplace else." I've always lived here so I don't see the cost of living as high; it's just how much life costs. It's less than NYC but more than most other places. But it may be a shock to people who aren't accustomed to it (as it was for my friends who relocated from Montreal, Virginia, Texas, and Maine).
If you want to live IN Boston, you may indeed decide to sell your cars. On-street parking is awful, renting a parking place might run you a couple of hundred dollars a month, a deeded spot can add $10K or more to the cost of a condo, and buying a spot can cost as much as condo would cost in another city...oh, and it's possible that when you do get a spot, it won't be anywhere near your apartment. Parking is less of a hassle in some areas than others but it's bound to be a pain unless you are fortunate enough to find housing that includes parking. (Which does exist!) And has anyone warned you about our car insurance rates yet???
But it's true that rents are declining from where they had been in recent years. I don't know much about the job market for teachers but you'll likely earn more money teaching here than teaching elsewhere. Most importantly, it's a great place to live.
Best of luck with your planning!
