Boston is extremely expensive, but an incredibly "liveable" city from any perspective. You'd want to give up the car if you lived in the city, but you might find jobs more plentiful in the expanding burbs around the ring routes 128 and 495, where many families with small children moved to escape insane real estate prices. In some cases, the drop in car insurance rates can almost make up for the increased fuel costs. Rents are better than a few years ago, but the biggest overall drops have been in less desireable student areas such as Allston, Brighton, Fenway, and parts of Somerville. A nice 2 BR apartment in Brookline, or pondside in JP, is still going to be knocking on the door of $1,500-2,000 a month.
Roslindale used to be a great bargin, as did Egeleston Square in JP-Roxbury. T access is sketchy, especially after hours. Hyde Park is more affordable, but bus and T commutes from far-flung parts of the city can eat into your day. Case in point: I used to live in Brookline, about 5 blocks from Jamaica Pond (still one of the prettiest sections of the city, by far) and my commute into Dorchester by T was 45 minutes to 1 hour door to door. I could ride my bike in 25-30 minutes, but not the best thing to do when it's an icy 10 degrees.
